Course descriptionThis course examines the role of the Generation of 98 in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Spanish literature (1895-1936). The members of the Generation were deeply committed to the fervent political and cultural debate which began before 1898 and persisted until the Civil War. Recent research has also extolled the Modernist features of their works. In order to place the Generation of 98 in its historical, cultural and literary contexts, this course discusses a selection of texts that show the Noventayochistas4 concern in: the scrutiny of Spanish national identity and of its role in the Spanish decadence that led to the 1898 crisis; Spanish politics from the 1880s to the Civil War; the impact of the crisis in the early-twentieth-century novel, poetry and drama; the representations of Modernism; and the influence of the Generation of 98 upon later literary groups, especially Novecentismo.
