Course descriptionThe Scope of Literature: the study of a range of literature written between 1700 and 1850, with an emphasis on 1) literary kinds, movements and contexts, and 2) a variety of claims regarding literature's capacities and limits.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 1 introductory level English Literature course at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

First Class Week 1, Monday, 12:10 - 13:00, Zone: Central. Monday lectures are held in Lecture Theatre A, David Hume Tower, George Square. Tutorials are allocated on the basis of a form completed at the first lecture.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will develop an enhanced ability to read individual texts in the light of historical, theoretical and linguistic contexts.
Assessment Information
One exam essay at the end of Semester 1 (50%), 2 essays of up to 2000 words (40%), tutorial assessment (10%).
