Course descriptionThe Scope of Literature: study of a range of literature written between 1850 and 1950, with an emphasis on 1)literary kinds, movements and contexts, and 2) a variety of claims regarding literature's capacities and limits.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 1 introductory level English Literature course at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will develop an enhanced ability to read individual texts in the light of historical, theoretical and linguistic contexts.
Assessment Information
2 essays of up to 2000 words (40%), tutorial assessment (10%), 1 exam essay during May diet (50%).
