Course descriptionIn consultation with the department, students on international exchange will identify a topic in English Literature for an independent Long Essay project, for which initial resources are available during the students' residence abroad. Students will have e-mail access to staff for consultation during the year. The Long Essay will be researched during the year abroad, and written up during fourth year on the students' return to Edinburgh.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students successfully completing the course will learn how to generate and approach a research project independently. They will develop their capacity for sustained independent work including the identification of a suitable topic, location and use of appropriate research materials, and writing up of a sustained literary project.
Assessment Information
A Long Essay of c 6,000 words on a topic in English Literature, presented in scholarly form with appropriate notes and bibliography
