Course descriptionThis course will examine a wide range of Virginia Woolf's published writings, including her fiction, essays, letters and diaries. Its aims are: to gain an understanding of the literary development of one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century; to examine the ways in which she and a number of her contemporaries sought to remake the genre of the novel in and for the early twentieth century; to exploer the literary, cultural and political contexts of her time. In this last context, the focus will be on topics including feminist and writing, modernism and the metropolis, literature and the new technologies (photography, film, radio), literature and politics, the writer in wartime. The course will close with a discussion of Woolf's legacy for the contemporary novelist.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( English Literature 1 (ENLI08001) OR Scottish Literature 1 (ENLI08016)) AND ( English Literature 2 (ENLI08003) OR Scottish Literature 2 (ENLI08004))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students completing this course will gain:

*A broad knowledge of Virginia Woolf's work and her development as a writer
*An understanding of some of the most significant aspects of modernist literature and culture
*An understanding of the ways in which the literature of the first decades of the twentieth century was shaped by the political and cultural events of the period
*An awareness of the critical discussion relating to Woolf and to modernist literature and culture more broadly.
Assessment Information
1 course essay of 2,500 words (25%)

1 take home exam essay of 3,000 words (75%)
Special Arrangements
Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot.
