| Course description | Health is one of the most important challenges facing developing countries. Despite considerable medical advances, over 6 million people die each year from malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB. Meanwhile, smoking and obesity, traditionally viewed as problems associated with "industrialised" countries, are now significant public health problems in developing countries. Good health is essential for economic development and poverty reduction, and therefore tackling disease and ill health is of global importance. This course discusses some of the common global health problems taking examples from various countries. It discusses potential and strategies to deal with the global burden of disease. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course the candidate should:
&· Understand the common and important illnesses threatening the population at a global level
&· Understand the key organisations involved in global health strategies
&· Have an appreciation of the medical impact of environmental disasters and the strategies to deal with this
&· Understand various wide ranging strategies to deal with global health issues.

Assessment Information
| Formal summative written assessment will constitute 50% of the student's grade. Online assessment (discussion boards, group work (wikis), and participation in interactive activities) will constitute the other 50% of their overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme (more details in programme proposal document). |
