| Course description | The purpose of this introductory course is to explain the origins, key components and current state of Health Informatics. It also introduces the building blocks of Health Informatics at theoretical and applied levels. The course takes a systems approach to and critical analysis of the complex adaptive systems needed for effective healthcare delivery. Course 1 and 2 together provide an introduction to the fundamentals of Health Informatics |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
a. Apply critical systems thinking to health informatics problems
b. Appraise the mechanisms for organising information and critically evaluate knowledge management methods
c. Evaluate the stages in Health Informatics development and the scope and diversity of the field
d. Critically discuss the role of a socio-technical perspective on the development and future evolution of the electronic health record and other structures within Health Informatics
e. Critically discuss factors influencing the development of Health Informatics

Summative work will be approximately 3000 words in total and be approved by the Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Course Leader. Combined with formative assessments, it may incorporate one or more of the following:
