Course descriptionThis course explores the powerful allure of Rome and Roman culture, both ancient and modern in eighteenth-century Britain. It will investigate how Roman art was used to serve distinctively British political and social ends. We will discuss the phenomenon of the Grand Tour and the reception of specific works of art (including the Raphael Cartoons and the Apollo Belvedere) and examine the ways in which British artists copied and adapted classical, renaissance and baroque Roman models in portraiture, landscape and history painting. The course will be organised around a series of case studies (which will include paintings and other objects from Edinburgh and its surroundings).
