Course description | Computer based tools and learning environments are increasingly used in teaching and learning. This course explores how such educational systems can be made more adaptive and interactive, in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of the teaching that they provide. The theoretical basis of adaptive learning environments will be examined. A number of techniques and examples of existing systems will be considered, This course aims to better equip students with the skills to design and evaluate intelligent and adaptive educational systems. The course presentation will comprise a mixture of lectures and group-based task-led seminars. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1 - demonstrate knowledge of theoretical approaches and methods used in previous systems through their application to new teaching tasks;
2 - demonstrate an understanding of the design issues in developing educational tools and environments through completing a number of design tasks;
3 - identify appropriate techniques for use in the design and implementation of adaptive learning environments, and assess their relative strengths and weaknesses in relation to specific tasks;
4 - describe methods that can be used to evaluate educational systems and apply these to existing systems.

Assessment Information
Written Examination 70
Assessed Assignments 30
Oral Presentations 0
The first coursework assignment will be a review of current systems, in conjunction with a design of a pedagogical system (or component of one), using knowledge of current systems to inform the design. The second coursework assignment would be a theoretical investigation of a particular set of techniques in relation to a specific aspect of ALE, with evaluation of their application to a set task.
If delivered in semester 1, this course will have an option for semester 1 only visiting undergraduate students, providing assessment prior to the end of the calendar year. |
