Course descriptionThis course aims to bring knowledge of language, in various aspects, to the teaching of textual analysis and related topics in the classroom. The following topics will be covered:-
- Grammar in textual analysis
- Style in the textual analysis of prose
- Poetic form in textual analysis
- Textual analysis, language variation and language change
- Scots language in Scottish texts

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course specifically aims to:-
* equip practising and future teachers of English with useful techniques of linguistic analysis;
* demonstrate possible applications of linguistic analysis and linguistic knowledge to selected literary and non-literary texts;
* provide classroom-relevant knowledge about variation and change in English;
* raise awareness of relevant printed and electronic resources.
Assessment Information
Completion of an assessment relating to all five units equivalent to an overall essay wordage of 4000.

This course is NOT available to undergraduate students.
