Course descriptionThis course is intended to consider data protection law in Europe, and examine the legal instruments which regulate the processing of personal data and personal privacy. After introducing the core concepts of data protection and the principles of processing, seminars will explore topics which have particular relevance in commercial practice, including outsourcing, employment issues, and the role of the Information Commissioner. Later seminars will explore the regulation of privacy by the ECHR, and recent case law in this field.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will:
- have an understanding of the core principles of data protection
- have an understanding of the principles of article 8 ECHR
- be able to apply data protection principles in a commercial context
- demonstrate a practical understanding of the role of the Information Commissioner and his/her role in European data protection law
- developed written and oral skills, including the clear and succinct expression of ideas
