Course descriptionAs an integral part of the MEng degree programme, students undertake an industrial or overseas academic placement consisting of six to eight months of full time engineering work, occupying the period from January to September of 4th Year.

The nature of the work the students do can vary enormously. In an industrially based placement, the host company will normally provide the student with a project (or projects) which will be started and completed during the placement period; alternatively the student will be assigned to an ongoing project and will be expected to make a significant contribution to that project. In a placement at an overseas academic institution, students are presented with a substantial research based project and expected to develop this project within the constraints of the accepted practices of the institution in which they are working.

Onus is placed on the student to secure the placement, although supporting advice is provided by members of the School and by the University Careers Service.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Complete a successful application letter and curriculum vitae, and demonstrate effective interview skills. This learning outcome is evidenced by successfully securing the placement (training sessions in these skills are provided by the University's Careers Service).

2. Demonstrate an increased level of awareness of the importance of time management skills.

3. Integrate, in a practical way, a range of degree-specific elements learned from previous modules into industrial or research operations.

4. Demonstrate a high level of professional communication skills through the writing of monthly progress reports, the completion of a substantial final dissertation and oral presentation of their work.

5. Make informed career choices based on first hand experience in industry/research.
