Course descriptionUsing composers as models (for example the Inventions of J.S. Bach and the String Quartets of Haydn) the course will introduce students to harmonic functionality, the contrapuntal relationship between voices, textures and techniques of instrumental writing.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will have an understanding of the fundamentals of harmony and counterpoint as evidenced by the ability to recreate in a variety of exercises a number of historical styles.
Assessment Information
A mark for attendance and courework (10%), a portfolio of two pieces of work (40%), a take-away examination (25%) and a 2-hour degree examination (25%).
