Course descriptionThis course will introduce students to methodologies and theories that have developed in the musicological field in the last twenty years. It will include influences from New Criticism, Semiotics and their related new methods of music analysis. After a general overview of Semiotics in various fields, students will be introduced to the problematics of the new terminology, to new syntactic and semantic methods of musical interpretation, and they will inspect these in view of their cultural and historical context.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will have become familiar with range of methodologies and theories in the New Musicology and in Semiotics. They will also be familiar with terminology applied in contemporary musicological discourse. This will inform their own research and prepare them for the writing of their dissertation.
