Course description | The Supervised Reading Course allows students to select their own topic for self-directed study.
The topic will be selected in agreement with the Programme Director and the chosen supervisor to complement but not reproduce the material and approaches covered in one or more of the other courses taken by the student, either by filling a gap in the material so covered, or by pursuing a particular subject or approach in significantly greater depth than on other courses.
The student and supervisor will negotiate supervisory arrangements.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To enable practitioners to develop their understanding of their chosen field of inquiry.
Aims/Learning Objectives
&· Possess a detailed understanding of a substantial body of literature on a topic relevant to the overall aims of the MSc programme for which you are registered, and which has not been addressed in the same breadth or depth of detail in other courses taken
&· Be able to reflect critically on the empirical and theoretical content of that body of literature
&· Relate the literature to topics or approaches covered in other courses taken
&· Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge and critical awareness of the chosen subject
&· Have gained an in-depth advanced knowledge of the particular subject
&· Demonstrate the ability to be a self directed, problem solving and autonomous learner
&· Be able to critically evaluate the literature in the field
&· To demonstrate the ability to synthesise the chosen literature and develop new formulations of the arguments

Assessment Information
A written critical exploration of a subject of their choice with application to nursing/health care. Subject to the approval of the course organiser.
The course paper must be clearly distinguishable from the MSc dissertation, but may address a topic in preparation for dissertation work.
Length: 4,500 to 5000 words
