Course descriptionForests are in crisis. High rates of deforestation, coupled with increasing demands on forest resources, place forests at the centre of debate on conservation and sustainable development. The key question is 'how may trees and forests be conserved effectively and used sustainably to provide the many resources and services they offer'; in addition to timber?'; The course will consider answers to this question, with an emphasis on the forest ecosystem as a whole although some components will also be examined in detail. The impacts of different management practices and different approaches to the use of forest areas, including agroforestry, will be discussed. The course will contain contributions from a broad spectrum of practitioners involved in different aspects of forest conservation and management.
