Course descriptionThis course is designed to elaborate, consolidate and extend understanding of the key concepts of the statistical methods introduced in the core Introduction to Statistics & Critical Appraisal course (which is therefore a pre-requisite, or co-requisite). Practical training in analysis of public health and clinical research data is provided, involving application of basic statistical methods to achieve descriptive summary, estimation of effects, hypothesis-testing and graphical presentation. There is a strong focus on appropriate interpretation of findings. The course is designed to mesh with the parallel core Introduction to Statistics & Critical Appraisal module with a minimum of duplication of teaching, in that learning in this module builds on lectures and tutorials for that module, by means of directed reading, class exercises, tutorials and computer practicals, supplemented by high-lighting explanation rather than formal lectures.
