Course descriptionThe secretory vesicle life cycle is central to both nerve transmission and hormonal responses to stimuli. Defects in this process can lead to clinical conditions such as epilepsy, schizophrenia and depression. The secretory vesicle life cycle will be introduced using a variety of different model systems including secretory cells and central neurones. The molecular mechanism of the different steps in the vesicle life cycle will then be discussed, including vesicle biogenesis, exocytosis, endocytosis and trafficking. This will include a discussion of the role of proteins essential for these processes. Current experimental approaches used to investigate the physiology of these processes will also be described and demonstrated. Teaching will be delivered using a combination of lectures, demonstrations and student presentations.
