Course description | This course is designed to provide course members with the knowledge and skills necessary for undertaking a dissertation/extended study at postgraduate level. It will offer an overview of the concepts and techniques which underpin research and provide students with an opportunity to practice certain research skills in conducting a small-scale investigation. Early enrolment is advised for this module, since demand for it is high and places are limited. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
1. identify research questions
2. locate and evaluate critically the relevant literature
3. evaluate a range of data collection instruments with reference to issues such as the reliability and validity of the data, feasibility of use, and ethical considerations
4. interpret data and comment on the conclusions supported
5. undertake a small-scale research project in an area of professional or personal interest
6. present a research report on the small-scale research undertaken in 5 above.

Assessment Information
The course is assessed by a written assignment (4-5000 word research report) based on the results of a small-scale investigation conducted by the student. |
