Course descriptionThis course is the second year first semester course for the new MA in Sustainable Development, being set up and run through SPS. It builds on the first year core course, Introduction to Sustainable Development. It intends to give students an overview of the key issues, and strategies that pertain to sustainable development. The course will largely be taught by staff from Humanities and Social Sciences, with contributions from staff in other parts of the University. It will be a multi-disciplinary appraisal of debates in sustainable development: outlining key contributions from different disciplines, the importance of thinking widely to understand and address the relevant issues, and the need to integrate different perspectives to achieve effective solutions.
This course will outline the principles and context of $ùsustainable development&©. It will then focus on a series of topics, policies and strategies. The topics unit examines debates about the sustainability of current social and political practices. The policies and strategies unit looks forward and discusses the opportunities for change, from a global to local and individual scale.

The course finishes by drawing out the implications and key learning points from the different disciplinary approaches, and provides a foundation on which students can build in further sustainable development courses. The course will lead into the second year second semester core course for the MA Sustainable Development, Society, Sustainability and Environment.

&· Understanding of the key sustainable development issues and challenges
&· Understanding of the underlying impact of a range of different factors, including governance structures and public engagement
&· Critical appraisal of the different measures that are being used to address these challenges
&· Ability to think through and evaluate the various opportunities and strategies available to understand and address these topics
&· Development of research and analytical and presentation skills, through guided research in preparation for assessment and tutorial presentations

Non-assessed, but compulsory, class work.
1500 word essay (40% of total mark)
and two hour examination (60% of total mark).
Students must pass the examination to pass the course
