This first stage of your studies in contemporary art introduces you to key concepts and approaches used in the study of visual culture. During your first year you will explore and apply a variety of critical approaches to analyse visual culture. Through a range of assignments you will test, apply and communicate your ideas in a clear, cogent manner.

Aims of course
1 Introduce and establish key concepts and theories of visual culture
2 Develop an awareness of and the ability to select and use a range of appropriate research methods
3 Foster critical enquiry that leads to the visual, verbal and written communication of ideas in an analytical manner

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. RESEARCH: Use a variety of appropriate critical approaches to show a broad understanding of visual images, artefacts, built environments and texts
2. ANALYSIS: Demonstrate an applied knowledge of the main theories of Visual Culture Studies
3. COMMUNICATION: Convey pertinent ideas using appropriate and coherent formats
