Course description |
Electronics 1 is an introductory service course designed to be taken by students whose main course of study is not necessarily Electronics or Electrical Engineering. The aim of this course is to help students gain an understanding and practical experience of electronics in order that they may undertake small electronics projects as part of their personal or professional lives. To this end, laboratory sessions run concurrent with, and are directly related to, the lecture course.
The course has two broad themes - analogue electronics and digital electronics. In the study of analogue electronics, we shall introduce the basics definitions of voltage and current before moving on to discuss topics such as operational amplifier circuits, power supplies, simple transistor circuits, transducers, electronics applications etc. In the study of digital electronics we shall look at the basics of a technology used to make logic gates, how logic gates may be constructed and how logic gates may be put together to make more complex functions. We shall also demonstrate that, with a basic understanding of electronics, a single chip microcontroller may be easily programmed and interfaced to analogue and digital electronics to perform powerful control functions.
The course contains some Mathematics (at Higher level) in the analogue electronics section. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course the student will have knowledge and understanding of basic electronic circuits comprised of analogue and digital components and the basic theorems that relate to their operation or design.
After successful completion of this course the student will be able to prototype simple electronic circuits in a laboratory environment and perform basic tests to evaluate their performance. |
Assessment Information
Examination (80%) plus coursework (20%). Two hour written examination. Coursework mark based upon laboratory performance. Students require to get at least 40% in each component of the assessment in order to pass Electronics 1. |
