Course description Students express preferences for topics from a selection spanning medical, scientific and non-medical subjects. Most are studies in depth in small groups in a self-directed manner guided by a tutor. The course is diverse in area, content, and approach to study. It will prove to be quite different from the type of task that students have been asked to tackle before in the curriculum, although elements of it will be familiar. The breadth, depth, and lack of prescribed direction of investigation have proved particularly unfamiliar to many undertaking the small group projects. The use of the web in these groups is particularly unusual. Its use for course information such as timetabling and handouts is now commonplace, but in this course websites are also the end product of the project for most students.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Intended Learning outcomes are to:
- explore a single area of medical science or other subject in depth, using library and other available resources.
- demonstrate an increased understanding of the nature and processes of research.
- show an enquiring and critical approach to the detailed study of a subject.
- use the skills of a group effectively in selecting and assigning aspects of the work and in producing a final report.
- plan and produce a website.
- additionally it should be possible to give a taste of some of the research that is possible, and often local, yet usually invisible. This may advertise BSc honours opportunities and areas which may attract you later in your career.
Assessment Information
For larger groups, the basis of assessment will differ according to the group. All involve individual elements (presentations, essays or projects) but some also involve working in groups, and marking varies accordingly.
