Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
When students have successfully completed this course, they will have:
1. carried out detailed exegetical study of a set text from the Hebrew Bible in its text-critical, literary, historical, and theological dimensions;
2. improved their linguistic skills;
3. had practice in writing a substantial exegetical essay; and
4. gained a deeper understanding of part of the Hebrew Bible.

Exegetical essay of 5,000 words, 90%

Academic description Participants on this course engage in a close reading and exegetical study of a selected text from the Hebrew Bible. Particular attention is devoted to linguistic, historical, theological, and literary issues.

Wk 3: Joseph and his brothers 1 (Gen 37)
Wk 4: Tamar and Judah (Gen 38)
Wk 5: Joseph in Egypt 1 (Gen 39)
Wk 6: Joseph in Egypt 2 (Gen 40-41)
Wk 7: Joseph and his brothers 2 (Gen 42-45)
Wk 8: Jacob (Israel) in Egypt (Gen 46)
Wk 9: Joseph's administration (Gen 47)
Wk 10: The Song of Jacob (Gen 49)
Wk 11: Resolutions (Gen 48, 50)
Transferable skills Students will gain ability in analyzing texts, marshalling evidence in support of that analysis, oral presentation skills, and handling detail in writing.
