| Course description | This is a core elective course for MSc in Accounting and Finance, MSc in Financial Management and MSc in Finance and Investment Programmes. (i.e. Students on the degree must take either this course or the Dissertation Part 1: Research Methods in Finance and Investment course). A dissertation will be undertaken during the summer on a topic of current interest to the finance and investment communities. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the principles of research in social sciences and finance and/or accounting;
2. Plan how they define research questions in relation to their chosen topic area;
3. Choose an appropriate research design for an accounting and/or finance research question;
4. Identify and critically evaluate literature in a relevant field;
5. Evaluate, select, justify and apply appropriate qualitative or quantitative data collection, presentation and analysis methods to their chosen area of research, in order to ensure that the evidence generated, its analysis and the conclusions drawn from it are valid and reliable;
6. Use such knowledge to construct an original piece of research of their own, and develop further independent research skills as well as the skills for presenting the findings of their research in a professional manner.

| Academic description |
This new course comprises the taught research methodology part of the dissertation for the MSc in Accounting and Finance, MSc in Financial Management and MSc in Finance and Investment.
This is one of two available taught research methods courses (the other being Dissertation Part 1: Research Methods in Finance and Investment) that, together with the course Dissertation Part 2: Practical Application (45 credits), combine to form the dissertation requirement (total 60 credits) for the successful completion of the degree of the MSc degree in Accounting and Finance, MSc in Financial Management and MSc in Finance and Investment.
