Course description**Online Distance Learning Course**

Modern Drug Discovery is underpinned by expertise in organic chemistry either in rationale or combinatorial approaches. Students need to appreciate the chemical natures of groups that are in the organic chemist&Šs toolkit, their stability and physical properties. The rationale and practical implementation of combinatorial and fragment based approaches should be appreciated. Moreover, the nature of successful medicinal compounds should be distinguished, and issues of pharmacokinetics understood.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to:

&ˇ Have an advanced understanding of the chemical and physical properties of groups commonly available to modify lead drugs;
&ˇ Appreciate modern methods of combinatorial and high throughput chemistry;
&ˇ Demonstrate common traits in successful medicinal compounds;
&ˇ Delineate the effect of chemical groups on the pharmacokinetics of drugs.
