| Course description | The course focuses on reading and discussing contemporary theoretical texts on a range of recent issues and debates within architectural theory and criticism, drawing on historical and inter-disciplinary texts as necessary. In particular, the course explores topics such as space and power, representation and semiotics, materiality and immateriality, territories and mapping, affect and atmosphere, infrastructure and technology, bodies and senses. Note: this second semester course follows on from the first semester Design Studio and the Architectural Technology Research Course - students must have passed these in order to progress into this course |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, the student is expected to demonstrate:
1. A capacity to research a given theme, comrpehend the key texts that consitute the significant positions and debates within it, and contextualise it within a wider historical, cultural, social, urban, intellectual and/or theoretical frame.
2. An understanding of the way theoretical ideas and theories, practices and technologies of architecture and the arts are mobilized through different textual, visual and other media, and to explore their consequences for architecture.
3. An ability to coherently and creatively communicate the research, comprehension and contexualitization of a given theoretical theme in relation to architecture using textual and visual media.
The learning outcomes are designed to cover aspects of the ARB/RIBA criteria that are listed in the BA/MA ARB Mapping document inthe Programme Degree Handbook. |
Assessment Information
Students are required to submit two assessments (course diary and essay) throughout the course. Both assignments are basedd on individual work.
ALL students are required to attend the 11 two-hour lectures during this semester, along with the one-hour seminar/tutorial that you have been signed up to. |
