Course descriptionThis course surveys the relationship between structural engineering and architecture from the late nineteenth century until the present day. In particular, it deals with the effect which structural technology has had on the visual aspects of architecture and is concentrates on the evolution of the design-team method of working in the context of the development of the British High Tech movement and its successors. Specific themes which are covered are the types of relationships which have existed between architects and engineers, the different philosophical approaches which are possible to the relationship between structural design and architectural design, the engineer as designer and constructor and the public perception of engineering.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Architectural History 1 (ARHI08005) OR Architectural History 1A: From Antiquity to Enlightenment (ARHI08001)) AND ( Architectural History 1B: Revivalism to Modernism (ARHI08004) OR Architectural History 1C (ARDE08002))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The principal learning outcomes of the Course are as follows:
- a knowledge of the contribution (symbolic and literal) which structural technology has made to the development of Modern architectures.
- a knowledge of the prominent structural engineers of the twentieth century and of their principal works.
- a knowledge of the different philosophical approaches which are possible to the relationship between structural engineering and architecture.
- a knowledge of the methodology and vocabulary of scholarship and criticism as it may be applied to the field of architectural technology
