Course descriptionThis course is only available to ECA students on degree programmes belonging to the School of Art.

This course enables you to establish knowledge of art practice through the production of work from a range of project led and self-initiated briefs. It is designed to introduce an understanding of various media and methods and encourage a personal direction for your work. The course facilitates an understanding of the studio as a place of study and experimentation and you will be encouraged to critically reflect on your work and the work of others.

Aims
1. To support you in gaining an understanding of the studio as an active place to make and study.
2. To instruct you in strategies and methods that lead to a coherent body of work.
3. To enable you to make appropriate decisions in the identification and development of different forms of art practice.


Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Introduction to Visual & Cultural Studies (ARTX07046) AND Visual Research 1 (ARTX07048) AND Presentation: Methods & Context 1 (ARTX07049)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. (You will be assessed against three Learning Outcomes and all are equally weighted:)
Concepts: Demonstrate creative responses to project briefs.
2. Methods: Demonstrate a range of fundamental skills, and knowledge of processes and materials, through art projects.
3. Outcomes: Realise studio work in an appropriate form.
Assessment Information
Semester 1-
2 (minimum) Formative assessments - hand in digital documentation at end of project blocks- 10 images/files evidencing Art Practice LOs.
1 Formative Mid Session Review at end of semester. You can submit work not previously assessed. Grades from semester are aggregated and moderated in light of any new work you present or if there is academic judgment that one project has negatively affected grade profile.

Semester 2-
2 Formative assessments in the studio at end of Week 5 and Week 12 - hand in digital documentation of work from project- 10 images/files evidencing Art Practice LOs. Only Grades from final 6 week project in your chosen specialism count to final grade profile.

Final Summative Assessment in Week 15 - hand in digital documentation of work from last 6 week project- 10 images/files evidencing Art Practice LOs. Grades from Week 12 assessment are moderated in the light of this submission by Stage 1 Art Co-ordinator and Head of School of Art, or deputy.
