| Course description | This exploration of the Artists Book aims to introduce students to the conceptual and practical aspects of the Artists book and includes instruction in bookbinding, printing and publication.
Theoretical aspects of this course require students to consider:
+ The history of book art, especially its development and singular status in the 20th Century as well as its current revival.
+ Its particular role as an aesthetic, philosophical, political and self-reflexive mode of artistic production which straddles the sphere of art and popular culture.
+ Book art's contextualization within the practice and theory of the multiple in post-war and contemporary art.
+ The relation of craft and technology to contemporary art practice.
The course will start with structured classes, research and visits to book collections throughout the city and beyond.
Students will be asked to consider the nature of the book in relation to:
+ Structure
+ Narrative
+ Form
+ Dissemination / Distribution
+ Content
+ Making. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical and the contemporary context of the Artists' Book.
2. Present evidence of an understanding of the relationship between the narrative and the form of the Artists' Book through research and production.
3. Consolidate a personally driven project through production of an Artists' Book. |
Assessment Information

On completion of this course students must present for assessment the following :
1. Research folio encompassing critical reflection on historical and contemporary practice (notebooks / folio/ text and image.)
2. Folio / notebook and examples / mock ups referencing technical methods of construction in relation to content.
3. One completed Artists' Book that demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between the form and the content as well as demonstrating an understanding of the historical and current context of the Artists' Book.

Aims of the course:
To introduce students to the conceptual and practical aspects of the Artists book.
To engage students in the process of making the book, from initial concept though development of narrative, sequence, construction, surface, form, means of production, editions and publication.

The course follows a practice based / research model.
Wk 1 Introduction to historical and contemporary book art.
Wk 2 Practical workshop
Wk 3 & 4 Visits to book collections
Wk 5 & 6 Technical methods workshops.
Wk 7-11 Project and tutorials.
Details of the above visits/ workshops etc. will be announced on the first day.
There will be the option for students to take part in and submit work for Artists' Book Fairs. Study trips to Artists' Book collections will be organised during the first weeks of the course.
