Course description | This course is only available to ECA students on degree programmes belonging to the School of Art.
This course will consolidate an enhanced understanding of critical reflection in relation to methods of information gathering and editing of resources appropriate to your specialism. Drawing on a focused body of resources and visual material you will define a personal perspective in relation to your work.
Aims
1.To engage critically in specialist visual research in relation to art practice.
2.To build on and enhance an understanding of research that underpins a self-motivated approach to studio practice.
3.To identify appropriate materials, methods and processes of research within the context of your own work and current practice.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. You will be assessed against three Learning Outcomes and all are equally weighted:
Investigation: Present evidence of a critical understanding of key practices and methods that underpin a substantial project(s).
2. Reflection: Demonstrate an ability to reflect on the impact of visual research on a considered body of work.
3. Application: Demonstrate a professional ability to apply a sophisticated clearly defined body of research in the support of studio practice. |
Assessment Information
Assessment is formative at end of Semester 1 and summative at end of Semester 2.
1. A research report. This report should detail four bodies of work. It should articulate how an artwork has been arrived at. How did you start? what did you look at? What processes did you use? What context are you working in? What are your methods? The report is therefore a synthesis of what you looked at. It could included sections from notebooks, your own writing (descriptive and reflective) this report could be paper collage and hand written text. The format should be chosen to reflect your working processes. You will need 2 for formative and a total of 4 for summative assessment.
2.One research statement that outlines your approach to your research. This piece of writing outlines what informs your work, what is its context? This is not a list of books or articles that you have read but is instead concerned with how you have assimilated things looked at, listened to, and things read. The word count is 300.
