Course descriptionA study of selected linguistic features of classical Hebrew, combined with reading of texts either from the Hebrew Bible or from early non-biblical Hebrew documents.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students should be able to:-
1. demonstrate an understanding of the way linguists approach problems in the description of ancient Hebrew;
2. exhibit a detailed understanding of classical Hebrew syntax;
3. translate ancient Hebrew texts into English, and defend their translation choices;
4. offer an historical perspective on the Hebrew language before the turn of the era.
Assessment Information
Reading/Seminar participation - 10%;
One 2000-word essay on one of the seminar topics - 30%; Degree exam - 60%.
This 2-hour exam will have two parts: (a) text translation and comment; (b) an essay on the seminar material.
