Course descriptionDetailed study of aspects of the Qumran community, the biblical texts from the eleven caves, and relationship to the beginnings of Christianity.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least three Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have:
- learned about the advantages and limitations of using modern sociological models in the study of ancient sects, parties and groups;
- gained knowledge of features that make the Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Sicarii and Fourth Philosophy distinctive as well as the commonalities that they share;
- studied the personalities, practices, rituals, and history/mythology of the communities' origins;
- acquired a good understanding of the grammatical and conceptual problems related to the reading of ancient religious literature;
- attained a thorough knowledge of the theology and piety of the scrolls.
Assessment Information
10% on seminar presentations and participation;
30% on an essay;
60% on degree examination.
