Course description | Strategy is central to contemporary organizations. This course seeks to outline the analytical contours of modern strategy in the broader context of globalization. Conceptually, the course will examine debates on decision-making, elites, financialization, globalization, power and politics, and performativity/reactivity. The course will illustrate these concepts through ¿real life¿ examples, including an exploration of the global financial crisis, a study of changes in the BBC, and an evaluation of the implications of the social media for strategy. The course will blend theory with practice, encouraging participants to reflect on how they would deal with complex strategic problems. The course will comprise of lectures, class presentations and visits by some guest speakers. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course participants will possess a comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between strategy, organizations and broader societal issues. In particular, participants will have a thorough grounding in:
- The implications of globalization for strategy.
- The rise of financialization and its implications for strategists.
- The processes of strategic decision-making.
- The role of power and politics in organizational life.
- The potential impact of rankings and league tables on strategy making.
- The challenges social media pose for strategy.
- The formation of corporation elites. |
Assessment Information
This course is assessed through (1) a group presentation (10%), (2) a group report (30%), and (3) a final examination (60%).
The scheduling of the assessment is organised as follows:
1. Each group will be given a case study to prepare and analyse. Groups will present in weeks 8 and 9. At this point, the lecturer will provide each group with formative and summative feedback, to help develop and improve their work for the group report.
2. Each group will prepare a 3,500 word strategy report, providing a strategic analysis and set of recommendations. This will be submitted in week 11 (precise hand-in to be confirmed). Feedback will be provided in week 12.
3. A two-hour examination (60% of the grade) in the summer examination diet, in which students will be expected to attempt two out of five questions. |
