| Course description | Lean business is the conceptualisation, implementation and improvement of business activity that maximises efficiency, quality and value. This course provides the concepts, examples of applications and planning of implementation necessary for the entrepreneurial use of lean business approaches in a variety of business settings, including manufacturing and service environments.The emphasis is on knowledge and understanding of lean principles and how to apply them in a variety of different contexts. The course will expose students to the theoretical and practical issues associated with building lean businesses, preparing them for roles in business that to which lean ideas are relevant. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should:
- Have a sound understanding of lean principles and lean tools and techniques
- Understand the context in which lean principles evolved in Japan during the post war period
- Be aware of the theoretical, practical strategic issues associated with lean business processes, in particular relevant.
- Be able to discuss critically the challenges facing lean business implementation.
- Be able to critically assess the issues facing private and public sector organizations who wish to implement lean processes.
- Critically evaluate lean practices, and understand their broader implications.
Upon completing the course, students should have developed the following cognitive skills.
- An ability to critically digest, analyse and synthesise a wide range of theoretical and empirical material relating to lean principles
- An ability to see how lean ideas can be applied, and their implications for product and process performance.
- Demonstrate critical facility and the confidence to challenge contrary viewpoints.
Students should develop and strengthen the following key skills during the course.
- An ability to apply lean business tools and techniques in different contexts
- An ability to write about lean concepts that cogently distils arguments and contrary facts in a mature fashion that highlights issues, assembles evidence and draws logical conclusions. |
