Course description | This course is divided into two main themes: Professional skills and clinical skills.
Professional skills:
This module will cover the topics:
Introduction to communication skills
Introduction to Personal and Professional Development Planning
Effective team work
The course is taught through practical work supported by keynote lectures.
Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. GEP classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to canine, equine and bovine veterinary medicine.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Professional Skills
1. Be aware of structures, career paths and roles in the veterinary profession
2. Accept the personal attributes and behaviours required of a professional
3. Engage in reflective activity in terms of self-appraisal
4. Recognise sources of stress and methods for mitigating it.
5. Develop basic communication skills appropriate for varying audiences, including client interactions.
6. Recognise factors affecting group relationships
7. Communicate effectively within a small group
8. Recognise factors influencing the human-animal bond
Clinical Skills
1. Define the meaning of the acronym SOAP and be aware of its relevance to the Clinical Skills module
2. Describe the signalment of a dog, horse and cow
3. Demonstrate observation skills relevant to performing a subjective examination of a dog, horse and cow
4. Demonstrate and verbalise the steps involved in performing a basic physical examination of a dog, horse and cow
5. Reflect on personal progress in the development of introductory clinical skills and identify own strengths and weaknesses.

Professional Skills
5) Attendance requirements - minimum 75% across Professional and Clinical Skills practical classes.
6) Portfolio submission of documents, which will include documents from other courses and activities, including EMS, the Clinical Skills component of the course (see below), and evidence of completion of assignments detailed in the Course Handbook.
