Course descriptionThis course deals with the way previous ancient historians and classical archaeologists have approached the study of the ancient world: a selection of people, themes and periods will be studied. The course also examines our own place within this tradition and modern approaches to some major controversies of the past.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A Pass in any Ancient History or Classical Archaeology subhonours course.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 3 courses in Classics related subject matter(at least 2 of which should be in Classical Art/Archaeology) at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of some of the major developments in the study
of the Classical world (both Ancient History and Classical
Archaeology). Understanding of the methodologies used in the past and their place within contemporary thinking at the time.
Greater critical awareness of current attitudes and
approaches to the classical world.
Assessment Information
One essay of 2500-3000 words (30%);
one (2-hour) degree examination (70%).

Part-Year Visiting Student (VV1) Variant Assessment:
One essay of 2500-3000 words (30%);
one take home examination/essay(70%).

In order for a student from outwith Classics to be enrolled on this course, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 in order for approval to be obtained.
