Course descriptionThis module introduces concepts and elementary calculations relating to the functional and structural design of silos and tanks. Its key focus is the relationship between stored solids (dry granular solids with more varied behaviours than soils) and shell structures used to contain them. The key ideas required to understand this practical structural form and to undertake simple designs are set out in the context of the European Standards: Eurocode 1 Part 4 (Actions in silos and tanks), Eurocode 3 Part 4.1 (Silos) and Eurocode 3 Part 4.2 (Tanks).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the behaviour of dry granular solids in storage conditions;
- identify the chief causes of loss of function in a granular solids container;
- define the relationship between loss of function and the properties of granular solids, including how tests for these properties may be conducted and calculations performed to ensure adequate performance;
- calculate the pressures exerted on the wall of a simple silo or tank;
- calculate the stresses developing in a silo or tank wall under stored material loading;
- calculate the resistance of a metal silo wall under typical simple stress states;
- apply some of the provisions of Eurocode 1 Parts 4 and Eurocode 3 Parts 4.1 to perform these assessments.
