Course descriptionThis course will be an option course on the MSc in Children and Young People's Mental Health and Psychological Practice. The course will introduce students to critical psychology and a number of associated theories. It will encourage students to question what psychology is and what it does, paying particular attention to developmental psychology theories and psychological and psychiatric explanations of children's mental health difficulties.

Aims

- To examine the practical and philosophical implications of debates between mainstream and critical approaches to psychology.
- To critically examine theories of child developmental.
- To critically examine commonly accepted explanations of childhood mental health difficulties.
- To consider alternative explanations of childhood mental health difficulties.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. To be able to demonstrate a firm understanding of a range of critical theories.



2. To be able to draw on social constructionist accounts to evaluate psychological knowledge in relation to children.
3. To be able to demonstrate skills in critical discourse analysis and its application to discourses of children's mental health.
4. To be able to demonstrate skills in reflexivity in relation to the production of psychological knowledge.
