|Course description||This course offered in Semester 1, provides an introduction to design processes for Design Informatics, for students who are following the MA and MFA Design Informatics programme. The course provides students with an introduction to contemporary design methods from conception through development, and finally to realisation. Through a combination of lectures and workshops, students will explore a range of design methods that begin with techniques for ideation including identifying assessment criteria, understanding users, user mapping, design probes, physical prototyping, the role of focus groups and user observation. The course continues by looking at contemporary design processes including the ┐double diamond┐ that involves the four steps of Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. Guest ┐designers┐ from a range of backgrounds will offer lectures and workshops on their methods and processes. Particular focus will be paid to the field of interaction design and the advent of digital media upon the design process. Supported by an individual design project, the course demands students synthesise a design practice with an understanding of method / process supported by evidence of research. In addition students will be required to record research material through a weblog (blog).

|On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Theory: demonstrate an awareness of research practices that explore contemporary methods of design and development from conception to production.
2. Practice: demonstrate an ability to develop a design artifact following a critical path across which method and process are clearly articulated.
3. Research: study and apply appropriate methods and design processes gathered from documented research to support a personal inquiry and production.

100% coursework. Students are expected to develop personal practical perspectives upon the series of lectures and manufacture a significant piece of coursework that demonstrates these ideas. The two intensive workshops will produce two separate responses which could be group based (20% each, 40% in total), before the larger individual piece which will constitute 60% of the module.
Learning outcomes will be assessed by coursework through presentations that articulate a theoretical framework for their practical work, submission of a design artefact (actual, digital or combination), and a submission of a URL that links to a blog that evidences their research, progress and findings throughout the course of the module.
