Course descriptionGeology students will go to either Mull or Kinlochleven, plus Spain. GPG students will go to Spain, and then can choose to either attend Mull or Kinlochleven.

Mull: An integration of the Archaean to Recent geological history of Mull, and the construction of a rock-relation diagram. Topics covered will include: Lewisian gneiss; structural geology of deformed Moine schists; Caledonian granite; Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; Tertiary plutonic and extrusive igneous rocks.

Kinlochleven: Structural mapping exercise in deformed Dalradian metamorphic rocks; Caledonian plutonics and extrusives.

The Spanish excursion focuses on the development of Neogene and Quaternary sedimentary basins and associated magmatic activity in the Betic Cordillera in SE Spain.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The nature of this course is such that the learning outcomes are principally field skills which will assist students when they undertake their independent mapping project. Students will learn how to exercise the autonomy and initiative required to conduct the independent mapping project and will practise drawing on a range of sources to assist with making judgements. The Mull and Kinlochleven trips will improve understanding of ductile deformation and a range of igneous phenomena. Both trips cover a similar range of material but the Kinlochleven trip is weighted towards structural mapping and the Mull trip towards interpreting rocks at outcrop. By the end of the Spain fieldtrip, students will have a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the Neogene and Quaternary evolution of SE Spain which will be gained through analysis of the sedimentology and geomorphology of the area studied.
