Course descriptionThe rise of Latin Christianity in Roman North Africa (modern Tunisia and Algeria), with special attention to Tertullian and Cyprian, martyrdom, church controversies, relations with pagan society and culture, and emergence of the Donatist counter-church.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed History of Christianity as a World Religion 1A (ECHS08005) AND Ecclesiastical History 2A: Christianity in the Pluralistic Roman World 100-305 (ECHS08007)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
display deep understanding of the theological, historical and socio-political content and context of some of the major texts by early North African Christian writers before Justinian.
They should enhance their ability to:
- analyse and criticise key primary source materials;
- engage in close reading of texts;
- show improved skills in oral and literary communication.
Assessment Information
Degree Examination 60%;
Seminar Presentation 10%;
3 x wiki entries 30% OR
1 x wiki entry plus one 2000-word essay 30%.
