| Course description | This course looks at the life and thought of John Henry Newman against the background of the Victorian Church and Victorian society. Newman had a profound impact in his own lifetime on both the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, and the influence of his thought is felt today far beyond the confines of those two communions. His engagement with questions of historicity and with the rapidly developing scientific thought and biblical criticism of the later nineteenth century did much to propel the Churches into the modern world. We will follow the outline of Newman's life, reading, week by week, sections from his most important and influential works. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- comment intelligently on key texts of John Henry Newman from both his Anglican and Catholic periods, and display knowledge of their historical contexts;
- analyse and criticise other key primary source materials;
- engage in close reading of texts.
