Course descriptionThe Early Years placement provides a context for students to extend and apply their learning about the curriculum, policies, principles and contexts of early years education. They are also expected to develop collaborative working practices in a Community of Practice approach (Wenger). To facilitate this students are placed, where possible, in placement A classes in pairs. Students are prepared for this placement through their experience of the Preparing for Teaching (Early and First Level Education) course and by engaging in Practicum classes that consider the application of pedagogical theory in the classroom. The experiential pre-school and the infant placement together provide a coherent experience of and engagement in early childhood education.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
┐ Discuss observations of early literacy and numeracy strategies in action, demonstrating understanding of approaches and issues in the teaching of reading and mathematics
┐ Explain the rationale underlying the design and resourcing of early years education settings
2. Practice Applied Knowledge and Understanding
┐ Gather fieldwork data about early childhood, learning and education using a variety of methods observation, note taking, photography, document analysis, interviews
┐ Plan purposeful learning activities for children for children in all curriculum areas at early and/or first levels of a Curriculum for Excellence using data gathered from a variety of sources (sequences in maths, language and two other curricular areas which may include an interdisciplinary sequence)
┐ Teach small groups and whole class for increasing periods of time towards one full day.
┐ Assess children┐s learning in all taught curriculum areas at early and/or first levels of a Curriculum for Excellence
┐ Evaluate teaching in all curriculum areas at early and/ or first levels of a Curriculum for Excellence
┐ Practise in a context which includes a degree of unpredictability

3. Generic Cognitive Skills
┐ Critically review and consolidate knowledge, skills and practices through the process of assessment of children┐s learning and evaluations of teaching

4. Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills
┐ Communicate effectively with professional level peers, colleagues, parents and specialists to enhance children┐s learning
┐ Communicate and interact with young children in early years settings to sustain learning conversations
┐ Use a range of software to support and enhance work at this level

5. Autonomy, accountability and working with others
┐ Work effectively under guidance in a collaborative relationship with qualified practitioners and other student teachers.
┐ Take significant responsibility for pupil learning and the organisation and management of the class.
┐ Work with others to bring about change, development or new thinking
