Course description | The course aims to provide a brief but inclusive account of Sicilian literary history and culture: from the Sicilian school of love poetry, which is credited with the invention of the sonnet, through the development of the ¿aria siciliana¿ in musical theatre and the mythical elaborations of the Arcadia, to the outstanding Sicilian prose that accompanied the Unification of Italy and the advent of cinema. Literary material spans from Giacomo da Lentini and the poets at the court of Frederick II to contemporary authors, including the Nobel prizes Pirandello and Quasimodo. In addition to the course, students will be involved in in-depth seminars and will give individual presentations on one or more of the main topics. |
