Course descriptionHIV is now responsible for more deaths annually than any other infectious disease. Since its discovery in 1983, rapid progress understanding its biology led to the development of the first antiretroviral drugs, but it was not until 1996 that effective combination therapy was introduced. Now there are 15 available drugs and sensitive assays for viral replication, and good clinical management allows most HIV+ individuals to live a normal active life in the developed world. However, most of the 40 million people world-wide currently infected with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa and have no access to antiretrovirals. Control of the infection here awaits the development of an effective vaccine, in which progress has been slow. We will start with an overview of HIV biology and epidemiology. We will then focus on two subjects where advances have been most significant for achieving control of the infection: 1) the replication cycle, antiretroviral drugs and the problem of resistance, and 2) HIV dynamics and pathogenesis.
