| Course description | This course aims to promote an understanding of the impact of globalisation on the epidemiology of non communicable diseases. Issues such as increased urbanisation, population mobility, the change in diet and exercise, and erosion of traditional systems, the global village, the impact of market changes, and climate change will be addressed. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course the candidate should appreciate the concept of globalisation and the aspects associated with new challenges in understanding the risk factors, surveillance of non communicable diseases and approaches to prevention and management. The candidate will understand
* Risk factors exacerbating the emergence of the non communicable disease pandemic
* Global trade and its relation to increased non communicable diseases
* Global environmental changes (climate warming, deforestation/ land clearance, water supply, changes in energy use and their impact on non communicable diseases
* Population mobility (displaced people, long term migration), urbanisation and non communicable diseases
* Be able to promote interventions to reduce the main shared modifiable risk factors for non communicable diseases: tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol
* Have a working knowledge of the 2008-2013 Action Plan for the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases |
Assessment Information
| Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme. |
