Course descriptionThis course considers the political crisis caused by slavery during the "middle period" in the history of the United States. It begins by considering the debate over slavery and western expansion during the first half of the nineteenth century. It continues by considering the breakdown in relations between North and south during the 1850s and the failure of the political system to solve the sectional crisis. The couse continues with a consideration of the Civil War which ensued - the bloodiest conflict in American history. As well as examining the military aspects of the war we shall also explore the abolition of slavery, the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and the social consequences of the conflict for North and South. The final third of the course considers the "Reconstruction" period after the war when Americans sought to remake their country in the aftermath of the war and the demise of slavery.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Honours students who complete this course should be able to engage in historiographical debates both orally and in writing. They should improve their awareness of the nature and use of historical evidence; to demonstrate the nature of history as argument by focusing on debates by historians about key issues; to increase their skills in research, writing and presentation; and to improve their critical skills through oral communication.
