Course descriptionThis course seeks to address questions relating to changing concepts of French identity in the postwar period. Why have memories of the Second World War been so difficult to come to terms with? Why was May 1968 a revolt rather than a revolution? Why was the Algerian War effectively erased from public memories? Why has France been so anxious to resist American influence politically and culturally? Was de Gaulle really the saviour of France when he returned to power in 1958? What does it mean to be French? Decolonisation, globalisation, immigration, European integration, Corsican nationalism shifted French boundaries. Is the French Republic still one and indivisible?

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A pass or passes in 40 credits of first level historical courses or equivalent and a pass or passes in 40 credits of second level historical courses or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will develop the following skills: an understanding of the key developments in French political culture in this period; an appreciation of the roles of myth and memory in constructions of French identity; a familiarity with current historical debates and theoretical approaches to the concepts of identity; an ability to use and evaluate a range of historical sources.
Assessment Information
The course will demand one 3000 word essay (week 10) and one two-hour examination (April/May 2006). The essay will make up one third of the final assessment. The exam will be worth two-thirds of the final assessment. Students can expect written feedback and individual consultation on their work.
