Course descriptionThis course examines the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), a conflict that appeared to contemporaries to be the battleground between the three great ideologies of the twentieth century: democracy, communism and fascism. It will consider the origins of the war before studying the main military, political, diplomatic, socio-economic and cultural developments of the conflict before assessing the consequences of General Franco?s unconditional victory in April 1939. Undergraduates will have access to the wide range of published and unpublished primary source materials.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course students will be required to demonstrate in their course work, written examination and oral presentations the following attributes:

? the ability to critically assess different historiographical interpretations of the Spanish civil war;
? the capacity for analytical and critical thinking;
? the ability to assess critically primary and secondary sources, understanding the challenges faced by historians when investigating the past;
? the capacity to work independently on a research topic and demonstrate the ability to evaluate and use effectively the relevant information;
? show an appreciation of, and respect for, different opinions;
? be able to express themselves clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
? the ability to produce well-argued, well-documented, and properly referenced coursework;
? good time-management and the ability to organize the workload effectively so as to meet the established deadlines.
? the ability to use primary sources in presenting an argument or thesis.

A reading knowledge of Spanish is not required
Assessment Information
Each student writes two essay of 3,000 words. Students will also be required to give seminar papers and documents presentations.
The degree exam will consist of two two-hour papers.
Weighting of marks is as follows:
Essay 1 = 16.667%
Essay 2 = 16.667%
Exam Q1, Paper 1 = 16.667%
Exam Q2, Paper 1 = 16.666%
Exam Q1, Paper 2 = 16.667%
Exam Q2, Paper 2 = 16.666%
